The documentary below is a fascinating look at what goes on behind the scenes in food industry: marketing, farm subsidising, food choices and the hugely relevant issue of obesity. It raises many questions from the morality of advertising junk food directly to children to what exactly is free choice when it comes to marketing anyway.
Although filmed in the US there are many parallels with what is happening in Australia – especially when it comes to obesity and major health issues such as diabetes type 2 affecting children more and more.
As one of the advertising executives says “It’s not my responsibility to ensure that kids are getting the right messages about food.” Then whose responsibility is it? The parents? The government? What do you think?
